Plagued with low self-esteem, Chloe Wilson turns to boys to feel better about herself. Poor judgment leads to her first sexual experience--date rape--at only fourteen years old. But her need for acceptance drives her risky behavior. Teen pregnancy and a total deconstruction of her identity finally provide the wake up call to figure out who she is, where self-esteem comes from, and how to be happy.
This memoir is a straight-forward look into the life of a teen girl's struggles with self-esteem and the shame she encounters on the road of teen pregnancy. Intertwined with statistics of teen pregnancy, the conclusion provides a clear view into the risks and generational consequences of teen pregnancy. A reflection guide offers teens an opportunity to examine their beliefs about sex, contraception, self-esteem, and other relevant topics.

The Total Deconstruction of Chloe Wilson eBook Rebecca Carpenter Reviews

Rebecca Carpenter’s THE TOTAL DECONSTRUCTION OF CHLOE WILSON is a coming-of-age memoir that puts the main character, Chloe Wilson, on a collision course with her destiny—pregnant at fifteen. Set in the late eighties in a small town in Colorado, this is the story of a young girl, raised in a strict religious household, who loses her way, loses her faith, and almost loses her life in the process. After a fleeting encounter with a much older man, thirteen-year-old Chloe lets her deepest primordial urges run wild and becomes sexually active. From here on out, it’s a downward spiral of lies, misconceptions and unintended ignorance. Sex wasn’t talked about in Chloe’s home; her lack of knowledge and need for attention from males would be her undoing. Her parents believed in hard work and religious duty and tried to instill the best qualities in their children. But it is Chloe’s mother, The Matriarch of the family, that ruled with an iron first, albeit wrapped in a velvet glove. To end up pregnant at fifteen, in a deeply religious family, created a world of fear, accusation, and unwarranted judgment from every angle... family, church, and community, all working against you. Dealing with the emotional and physical aspects of pregnancy at ANY age is something to write about, but to deal with it at fifteen, a time in one’s life when a girl is trying to figure everything and anything out, has to be a terrifying experience. What to do abortion, adoption, keeping the baby, dealing with the stigma of teen pregnancy in a small-minded community. The reader feels all of this, and can’t help but to root for Chloe. She was given a stacked deck of cards, but knows right from wrong. Chloe dissects herself and all that she knows in her search for acceptance. We follow her journey and see how this child of our society deals with such a life-changing event. Rebecca’s graphic and compelling description of her trials and tribulations will force readers to examine certain aspects of their own lives. The uncomfortableness of her dilemma is something that has to be dealt with. Whether a person agrees with Creationism or Evolution, certain biological events will take place in the human body. This is science, not a fallacy, and the youth need to be informed. This publication should be part of every sex education class. The book not only confirms the difficulties of teen pregnancy, but also how it affects the lives of those involved families fractured, lives altered, dreams unfulfilled.
Loved this story—was engaged from page one. After reading Rebecca Carpenter's "The Total Deconstruction of Chloe Wilson", as a forty-six year old male, I feel I can now say I know what it feels like to have a full cervical exam… no thank you Doctor, not today. My hope, along with the Author, is that it will help the youth to make smarter, better decisions. Education is the key.
A compelling look at a young teen’s journey through pregnancy—the fear, ostracism, decisions, and struggles. Readers will be gripped with the story of Chloe’s stumbling attempts to find herself and her transformation into a confident young woman who discovers her true value. Teens will be captivated by the author’s fresh voice—vulnerable, spunky, and totally relatable.

This book should be in every junior high and high school library. The emotional struggle of this young girl moved me to tears. Her family, her loss of friendships, her agonizing and frightening childbirth experience -- all make this an incredible read. In the end, the author's discussion questions create a valuable learning experience.
Wonderfully easy read for all girls who are going through puberty and are dealing with the stress of growing up. Great opportunity to read this with your daughter and have a heartfelt discussion about sex and the ramifications that follow it. I was extremely moved.
Rebecca's descriptive writing leaves you captivated to the very end. I had a hard time putting it down. I definitely recommend this book to all teenagers, those considering sex and those already active. It would also be a good tool to start an open and honest family discussion.
This book fully captures the intense roller-coaster of emotions most teenage girls go through. It highlights, and paints an eye opening picture of the fact that self confidence comes from being happy with who you are. I believe that teen girls going through similar circumstances will think twice about having unprotected sex.
Well written story that sucked me in as I laughed and cried with the main character, Chloe Wilson. I found her very real and relatable. Any girl who is considering having sex before marriage should read this book to get a clear view of the unintended consequences that can result. Thanks to Rebecca Carpenter for sharing this emotional story.
